Understanding the Screen mirroring technology

What is Screen mirroring?

Screen mirroring allows you to wirelessly present your smartphone/PC/Tablet screen to another screen, like a TV or a projector. Its best use is for sharing presentations and photos from your mobile device. It is a local action, which means your smartphone/PC/Tablet and the TV or device where you want to project your screen need to be on the same network.

Requirements for screen mirroring iPhone to TV

There are two main components that make this possible, the sender and the receiver. Here the sender is your smartphone/PC/Tablet and the receiver could be hardware devices like AppleTV, Chromecast, Roku, a Smart TV, and others. If hardware is a limitation then, there are some software applications too that make it possible. However, that is a subject of another discussion.

The other most important requirement is for both the devices, your iPhone and TV should be on the same Wi-Fi network.

Devices required for screen mirroring

For iPhone, we use its native technology AirPlay for screen mirroring. Just having an iPhone is not enough, you need a receiver, AppleTV, Chromecast, Amazon Firestick, and Roku devices are some examples. Now, most of the smart TVs, like Samsung, LG, Sony, Toshiba, Insignia, and others also have AirPlay support on their select TV models of 2018 and later.

Different ways to screen mirroring iPhone

In this article, we will learn how to screen mirroring iPhone in different ways. I have tried to cover all the options choose what you need based on the device you have.

1. Screen mirroring iPhone to TVs compatible with AirPlay2

As mentioned above AirPlay is Apple’s own wireless technology for screen-mirroring and streaming media from your personal device. Most modern-day smart TVs, like, Samsung, Sony, LG models post 2018 are likely to be compatible. However, you can check your TV manual to be sure.

Pre-requisite:
  • A SmartTV, which is compatible with AirPlay or AirPlay 2.
  • Makes sure the TV and your iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network.
How to connect: Step by step guide
  1. Go to the Control Center on your iPhone.
    • If you are using iPhone X series and above. Swipe down the screen from top-right side of your screen.
    • If you are using iPhone 8 or earlier then swipe up from the bottom edge of your iPhone screen to get Control Center.
  2. Look out for two overlapping rectangles. This is the called, ‘Screen Mirroring‘.
  3. Tap on Screen Mirroring.
  4. Select your AirPlay2 enabled TV fom the list of available devices.
  5. You might see a passcode appear on the TV screen. Mostly, if you are connecting for the first time.
  6. Enter this passcode into your iPhone screen to confirm.
  7. Once done, you should be able to mirror your iPhone screen on your TV screen.
  8. To stop mirroring, go back to Control Center and tap the same icon ‘Stop Mirroring‘.

2. TV not compatible with AirPlay2

If you have a dated TV model or are not compatible with AirPlay then do not fret. There are technologies available to help you screen mirroring phone to this TV using a medium in between. This medium could be AppleTV, a streaming device like Chromecast, or through a wired connection.

1. Using AppleTV

Apple TV is a receiver that is used to connect to your TV which may not be compatible with AirPlay 2. You can play videos, songs, send pictures or use the streaming services like AppleTV+, HBO Max, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, and more.

Pre-requisite

Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.

How to connect: Step by step guide
  1. Go to the Control Center of your iPhone by swiping down from the top-left of your screen.
  2. Tap on Screen Mirroring.
  3. Select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.
  4. You may have to enter a passcode on your iPhone, if it appears on the TV screen. This generally happens for first time connecting.
  5. To stop mirroring, go back to Control Center and tap the same icon Stop Mirroring.

2. Using other devices like Chromecast, with non-compatible TVs

If you do not have AppleTV then do not worry, there are several cheaper alternatives available like Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Firestick, and more. Let us see a few ways how to screen mirror on iPhone.

For Chromecast

You can use Chromecast to stream videos easily from popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime. However, if you want to screen mirror then you may have to install other third-party apps. Most popular is the Chromecast streamer app. There are other apps also, but most of them are paid after a limited free trial.

After you install the app, you would have to give permission to the app to connect to your device and local network. From the list of devices, choose your TV and “Connect”. You are all set now.

For Roku device
  1. Go to the Control Center of your iPhone by swiping down from the top-left of your screen.
  2. Tap on Screen Mirroring.
  3. Select your Roku device from the list of available devices.
  4. For first time you may have to enter a passcode on your iPhone as it appears on the TV screen.
  5. Confirm ‘OK‘ to connect.
  6. To stop mirroring, go to Control Center and tap on ‘Stop Mirroring‘.

3. Connect to Youtube App

Streaming YouTube content from iPhone to any Smart TV:

Pre-requisite

Your iPhone and the Smart TV must be on the same WiFi network.

How to connect: Step by step guide
  1. Go to the YouTube application in your iPhone.
  2. Select the video you want to play.
  3. On the video screen, you will notice “Connect To a Device” option at the top right corner. It will look like a rectangle with a diagonal wifi symbol.
  4. Click to enable you to connect your iPhone to the nearby TV.

4. Physically connect your iPhone to TV

What if you do not have AirPlay-compatible TV or other streaming devices. We will use the age-old physical connection here. All you need is an adapter, depending upon your iPhone model you can select a Lightning to HDMI adapter or a Lightning to VGA adapter for older TV models.

Lightning to HDMI adapter

Connect HDMI end to your TV using an HDMI extension cable and lightning port to your iPhone. Tap “Trust” when the popup appears on your iPhone screen. The adapter would also have a charging port that needs to be connected to power the adapter.

Once the connection has been established the TV will be able to mirror your iPhone screen.

Bonus section – Mirror your iPhone screen to a MacBook 

If you have a Mac then screen mirroring can be achieved using AirPlay. Just like I have explained above for TV and AppleTV, you will find your MacBook on Control Center. Use the screen mirroring icon and choose your MacBook from the list. You should be able to mirror your screen easily.
